Deep indigo looks confident on a swatch and can become surprisingly opinionated after washing. A useful sourcing brief records the target shade, lighting, wash route and approval sample—so design and supplier judge the same blue, and you can RFQ or request samples without three versions of “deep indigo.”
Keep dry and wet crocking as separate evidence. Do not merge them into one “looks fine” message before bulk.
Define the target before sampling
Provide a physical swatch or approved reference. Say whether the target is clean, dark, smoky, green-leaning or red-leaning. Record viewing light, base construction, stretch, weight direction and garment application. If the project includes a wash, describe desired contrast and surface character—not only “deep indigo.”
| Deep indigo decision | Write before sampling |
|---|---|
| Shade target | Reference swatch, undertone and viewing light |
| Wash target | Contrast, cast, handfeel and fixed vs exploratory steps |
| Application | Garment, panels, stretch direction and contact areas |
| Decision | Sample condition, rubbing/laundering checks and revision |
Color matching is a process
Review the first sample against the reference under consistent conditions. Separate base shade, surface finish and wash effect in comments. Ask for a revision number and keep the comparison sample. Use digital images as support—not the sole approval standard.
One approval chain for base and washed result
Link reference, submitted sample, viewing setup, condition, comments and revision in a color approval record. For indigo, say whether the decision concerns base fabric, a woven reference or the intended washed result. Carry the accepted reference into shade-band and lot review—do not treat a color name as a release instruction. Related method: lab dip approval.
Plan wash development
Wash can change depth, contrast, cast and handfeel. State which steps are fixed and which are exploratory. Review a sample that represents the intended garment route and note what changed from the unwashed state. For jackets or dark styles, inspect high-contact areas, seams and panel transitions. Context: denim washing techniques.
Rubbing and Colorfastness Questions
Ask which dry or wet rubbing, laundering and appearance checks are relevant to the end use. The buyer and supplier should agree the sample condition, test method and acceptance language before treating a result as pass or fail. Ask for test evidence from the fabric and finish you are considering, and agree the acceptance criteria before bulk approval.
| Check | Tie the evidence to | Ask before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Dry rubbing | Identified specimen, finish and agreed method | Does the result represent the proposed material and stage? |
| Wet rubbing | Identified specimen and stated test conditions | Are required condition and buyer criterion recorded? |
| Planned wash | Base reference, processed sample and recorded route | What changed in shade, cast, handfeel and relevant performance? |
| Garment contact areas | Intended use, trims, lining and adjacent materials | What additional evaluation does this application need? |
Do not assume a wash solves rubbing, or that one result covers every color lot. Keep buyer disposition separate from appearance approval.
Bulk Shade Control
Freeze the approved reference with its date, condition and revision. During production review shade consistency across rolls and compare any visible variation under the agreed light. Inspect width, stretch direction, finish, defects and wash response as separate observations. If the garment uses several panels, check the points where a small shade difference will be most visible.
Lock-Before-Bulk Checklist
| Lock item | Evidence to keep | Buyer tip |
|---|---|---|
| Shade target + revision | Physical standard ID, date, condition | Reuse lab-dip approval record (sister page 98) |
| Wash route | Wash sample ID + written acceptance range | Do not merge pre-wash and post-wash into one “looks fine” |
| Dry crocking | Method, specimen ID, result, disposition | Keep separate from wet |
| Wet crocking | Method, specimen ID, result, disposition | Keep separate from dry |
| Lot vs retained standard | Lot/roll range + comparison light + disposition | Development approval ≠ automatic bulk release |
Sourcing and RFQ Inputs
Include the shade reference, base fabric direction, wash target, garment use, sample requirement and checks in the quotation request. The LYDENIM products directory is a starting point for browsing. For wash-development context, review the denim washing techniques guide. For a project-specific deep-indigo brief, use the LYDENIM fabric RFQ page. Tell us the shade and garment you have in mind, and we can discuss suitable options for your project.
Record proposed base, weight/width, stretch, shade reference and wash condition in a denim fabric specification sheet. Send it with the RFQ, intended sample stage and required test scope—ask the supplier to price the stated route and list exclusions or alternatives separately.
Next step — send a color and wash brief. Include reference, intended garment, required checks and what must be fixed before bulk (approved reference, sample condition, wash direction, inspection method, revision). Use the LYDENIM fabric RFQ so we confirm project-specific options, availability and commercial details against one deep indigo—not three.

FAQ
Can “deep indigo” be approved from a screen?
It can start the conversation, but physical comparison under a defined light is safer.
Should the wash be selected before the color?
They should be developed together when the wash changes depth or cast.
What must be fixed before bulk?
Fix the approved reference, sample condition, wash direction, inspection method and revision record.
Does an approved deep shade mean rubbing performance is acceptable?
No. Appearance approval and rubbing evaluation are separate. Review the identified specimen, method, condition and buyer criterion before accepting the result for the intended use.
